The Beautiful Door of Hinge
Puerta de Bisagra is considered the most important in the city, both because of its location and its size. Located on the walls of the city of Toledo. It is of Muslim origin, from whose time it conserves remains in the second interior body.
Its name derives from the Arabic word Bab-Shagra, which means "Gate of the Sagra". It was completely rebuilt under the reigns of Charles V and Philip II.
It is formed by two independent bodies with two high crenellated walls that unite them, forming a courtyard between them, where a statue of Carlos V is found. The external side is formed by a semicircular arch with padded ashlars, on which it is located. a great shield of the «Imperial City», with its unmistakable two-headed eagle, as well as a pediment with a sculpture of a guardian angel.
Flanking this entrance two large circular towers. The body that faces the city has another semicircular arch door, flanked by two square towers topped by pyramidal roofs.
It is not the last door that you must flank to get to the city center, because according to where you go up the street you will find others much smaller, such as the Puerta del Sol and the door of Cristo de las Luces, the latter next to the mosque of the same name.
